You matter to God.
This devotional explores the deeper meaning behind Jesus' choice to carry the cross — not just as an act of suffering, but as a model of surrender and obedience.
Whenever we think of the cross, we think pain and suffering. That image of Jesus carrying the cross is very sobering. But wait a moment - what if the cross is not only about suffering? What if the cross also represents a choice? Jesus had the power to say no. He could have called down angels (Matthew 26:53) or silenced His accusers or stopped the entire trial. Instead, He chose the cross. He surrendered to the will of the Father and to the mission of saving humanity.
Jesus said, "I lay it down of my own accord, but no one takes it from me." (John 10:18). His pain wasn't arbitrary or forced. It was a decision based on love and obedience.
Being a Disciple of Jesus is Choosing Surrender. Jesus is not just talking about adversity when He says, "Take up your cross and follow me" (Matthew 10:38). He is asking us to willingly surrender, give up our ambitions, our ego, and our own desires so that we can accept His will.
Surrender Brings Life. Jesus' surrender brought salvation. Our surrender brings freedom, peace, and significance for eternity. Saying yes to God could cost us something but it will always lead to closer to him and deeper in our walk with him.
Some ways to "take up your cross" today could look like:
Choosing to forgive when we have every right to feel small.
Being honest when lying would be easier.
Being generous when saving feels safer.
Following God's will when our own plans feel more convenient.
These are small, daily acts of intentional surrender that mirrors the heart of Christ.
The cross is not just unavoidable suffering, and more about intentional surrender. Ask yourself this: What "cross" is Jesus asking me to pick up right now? And, is there anything holding me back from fully following Him?
